Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
