Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.
The victims are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She told the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
