Pat Bamford Joins the Blades Despite Initiating Derogatory Songs Targeting Manager Chris Wilder
The striker has joined the Championship side just half a year following instigating derogatory songs targeting the team's coach, Chris Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, without a club after departing from Leeds United, has signed a agreement with the Championship strugglers through the winter. His seven-year spell at Elland Road finished through agreement in August.
One of the player's last memorable actions while at Leeds involved leading insulting songs regarding Chris Wilder amid the club’s promotion celebrations this spring. Now, the former England player will be playing for Wilder as the Blades’ manager aims to pull his beloved club out of the drop zone.
Previous Conflict Involving Bamford and Wilder
The pair had history prior to Leeds won promotion to the Premier League last season and United lost the promotion decider by Sunderland. Wilder called the forward as a "muppet" back when the situation was different during the 2018-19 season and the Blades secured automatic promotion whereas Leeds fell short in the promotion playoffs.
Making Amends and Looking Ahead
Everything seems to have been put behind them with Sheffield United, the Championship’s least productive attack, in desperate need of improvement up front and Bamford looking to revive his playing days.
The Wilder chant spread widely in April. A repentant Patrick and the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, called the Sheffield United manager the next day.
Chris Wilder commented back then: “Had a conversation with Patrick recently and I have no issue whatsoever with that. I'm uncertain regarding the words used from a fellow pro! But I appreciated and admired him giving me a call.
“We had 20 minutes and the same again I talked with Daniel Farke as well and had a half-hour chat together and he's a great person, a class act. Back in my playing days we used to give it and take it and that’s part and parcel of football across all levels, even on Sunday league. I've got no problem at all. I'm fine with it and I said that to Patrick.”
Latest Playing Challenges
The forward made 18 appearances with Leeds United last season but the ex- Forest, Chelsea and Middlesbrough striker has struggled with fitness issues over the past few seasons.
