The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit program reaching its finale—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get swayed by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to avoid both.
“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Does the creator Know the Ending of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team are not listening by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“There are some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
